Farmers Storm Pune Sugar Complex: “Delay Crushing or Face Agitation”

Sugarcane Farmers Protest Pune: Across Maharashtra staged a protest at the Sugar Complex (Sakhar Sankul) in Shivajinagar on Thursday, demanding that the state government postpone the start of the sugarcane crushing season from October 15 to after November 15.

The agitation, organised by multiple farmers’ groups, began around 10 AM and prompted temporary traffic restrictions in the Shivajinagar area.

Sugarcane Farmers Protest Pune: The Core Demand

Farmers argue that starting crushing operations on October 15 would force sugar mills to process immature cane. According to farmer representatives, immature cane has a lower sugar recovery rate — around 9% compared to 9-11% for mature cane — which reduces both farmer returns and mill efficiency.

“We are not against the industry,” said one farmer representative at the protest. “We are asking for a delay of one month so that the cane matures fully. This benefits everyone — farmers get better prices, and mills get better recovery.”

Demands Submitted to the Sugar Commissioner

The protesting organisations submitted a memorandum to the Sugar Commissioner’s office with the following demands:

Sugarcane Farmers Protest Pune: What Happens Next

Farmers have warned of indefinite agitation if their demands are not addressed. The Sugar Commissioner’s office and the state government are expected to respond in the coming days.

Sugarcane Farmers Protest Pune: Why This Protest Matters

The Sugarcane Farmers Protest Pune is not an isolated event. It reflects a broader pattern of farmer mobilisations across Maharashtra this season, driven by concerns over input costs, recovery rates, delayed payments, and policy decisions affecting the sugar sector.

Maharashtra is India’s largest sugar producer. In the 2025-26 season, the state crushed approximately 104-105 million tonnes of cane and produced around 99 lakh tonnes of sugar. Any disruption to the crushing season has significant economic consequences for farmers, mills, and consumers.

The protest also highlights the political weight of the sugarcane belt. Farmer organisations have long been a powerful voice in Maharashtra’s rural politics, and their demands often influence government policy decisions. The Mahayuti government is now under pressure to balance farmer demands with mill viability and consumer interests.

What Happens If the Government Agrees

If the state government agrees to delay the crushing season to November 15, farmers will benefit from better recovery rates and higher returns. Sugar supply may tighten briefly ahead of the festive season, but the overall quality and efficiency of production will improve.

What Happens If the Government Refuses

If the government proceeds with the October 15 start, farmer organisations have warned of indefinite agitation. This could lead to further protests, traffic disruptions, and political pressure on the ruling alliance.

Sugarcane Farmers Protest Pune: What to Watch For

The Sugar Commissioner’s office and the state government are expected to respond to the farmers’ demands in the coming days. Any announcement will be closely watched by farmers, mills, and political parties across Maharashtra.
