₹1 Crore Hashish Seized at Pune Airport After Woman Tries to Smuggle It in Cosmetic Jars

Pune: The Pune Airport hashish seizure has led to a major drug bust, as customs officials have seized over a kilogram of suspected hashish worth approximately ₹1 crore. The narcotics were concealed inside ordinary cosmetic containers carried by a woman who arrived from Bangkok.

Pune Airport Hashish: The Arrest

The accused, a 33-year-old Indian woman reported to be a resident of Bengaluru, landed at Lohegaon airport on the evening of October 1. She was travelling on Air India Express flight IX-241 from the Thai capital.

Officers from the Air Intelligence Unit of Pune Customs, working jointly with the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) Pune unit, grew suspicious during behavioural profiling and baggage screening.

How the Drugs Were Hidden

A thorough search of her checked-in luggage revealed the contraband. Inside three commercial cosmetic jars — two labelled “Rice & Yolk Hair Treatment” and one labelled “Body Scrub” — officers discovered a waxy, semi-solid substance with a strong, pungent odour.

What appeared to be harmless personal care products was in fact 1.243 kg of suspected hashish (cannabis extract).

A field test using a narcotic detection kit confirmed the presence of cannabis.

Value and Legal Action

The entire consignment, valued at approximately ₹1 crore in the illicit market, was seized under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985. The passenger has been arrested, and investigations are ongoing to trace the origin of the drugs and their intended destination in India.

A Growing Challenge

Officials noted that the packaging was deliberately chosen to resemble regular toiletries, making it harder for scanners and casual checks to raise red flags. The case highlights the ongoing challenge of detecting sophisticated concealment methods on international routes, particularly those linking Southeast Asia to Indian cities.

Further probes will examine whether the woman was acting alone or as part of a larger network. Authorities have urged travellers to report any suspicious activity and reiterated that attempts to smuggle narcotics will face strict action under the NDPS Act.

A Growing Challenge for Security Agencies

This incident is the latest in a series of drug seizures at Indian airports, highlighting the increasing sophistication of smuggling networks. Officials note that smugglers are constantly adapting their methods, using everyday items like cosmetic jars, food packaging, and clothing to evade detection.

The Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) of Pune Customs has been ramping up its surveillance capabilities, using behavioural profiling and advanced scanning technology to identify potential carriers. However, the sheer volume of international passengers passing through major airports makes this a challenging task.

What the NDPS Act Says

Under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985, smuggling of commercial quantities of narcotics carries severe penalties, including rigorous imprisonment and heavy fines. The Act classifies cannabis-based drugs like hashish as prohibited substances, and those found guilty of trafficking can face up to 20 years in prison.

Authorities have urged travellers to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to airport security or local police. They reiterated that attempts to smuggle narcotics into India will be met with strict legal action.

Why This Case Matters

The Pune Airport hashish seizure is a stark reminder of the evolving tactics used by drug cartels. By hiding contraband inside everyday cosmetic products, smugglers attempt to exploit gaps in routine baggage checks. This case underscores the importance of constant vigilance by customs and intelligence agencies. It also sends a strong message that India’s airports remain a hostile environment for those attempting to traffic narcotics.

Investigators are also checking the woman’s travel history and phone records to determine if she had made similar trips in the past, as the Pune Airport hashish seizure points to a possible larger smuggling network.
